After 25 years as an agent, owner, manager and other roles, I’ve worked in, on and with hundreds of agencies. I’ve personally experienced and heard plenty of good, bad and ugly stories when it comes to events, sponsorships, speaking, etc. I taught my first Insurance 101 class at Sherwood High in 1999. My agency was title sponsor of our town’s famous car show one year, it rained the whole day and was a total disaster. Anything like that ever happen to you?
I work with a small group of agencies now, and focus on marketing, branding and social media. Community Marketing is one topic that keeps coming up. Some agents love it, some agents hate it. Most do some type of community outreach to support other marketing and prospecting strategies.
None of them have a “System.” Unlike other tactics such as internet leads, cold calling, email, etc., my experience is that agencies just wing it when it comes to planning, budgeting and tracking their Community Marketing investments.
Which is why sometimes the effort is successful and other times not so much…
So a few years ago - in between my gigs at insurtechs - I started researching Community Marketing and what’s available for insurance agencies. I’ve spent over 1000 hours (and counting!) on Google and other search engines, Chat GPT and other AI platforms, insurance carrier and industry websites, agent forums, read several books, etc. What do agents use to choose, manage and score their community marketing investments??
And what I’ve found is not much! Carriers offer very little, whether you’re captive or independent. A Blog post or brief mention in an article. There’s no industry training or courses devoted to the subject. Lots of companies are offering social media services, but none are focused specifically on this vital strategy. It's crazy, agencies spend a tremendous amount of time and money every year on community marketing.
